Waterborne UV Tiecoat

About Waterborne UV Tiecoats

Our exclusive ASAC™ Technology has enabled the development of a unique waterborne-UV curable adhesion promoting tiecoat for use with sap wood species and exotic woods that contain oils.  Although lumber producers do their best to deliver quality wood substrate, there can occur in nature higher or lower content of free sap, pitch, and oils in these types of wood species. The value of the use of a tiecoat cannot be overstated to enhance the adhesion of UV curable finishes. This product also supports the excellent balance of Performance and Environmental Sustainability to allow conformance to the program requirements of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), Greenseal, and LEED.

Waterborne UV Curable Wood Tiecoat - Green Light Coatings Application Tech Tips

The GL-8360 Tiecoat is a waterborne UV curable polyurethane dispersion composition that effectively seals or blocks the surface of wood so that internal oils, resins, sap and pitch cannot migrate to the surface.  When these materials exist on the surface, they can contribute to poor adhesion and appearance of topical UV curable coatings and finishes.

It is essential that the wood being treated and the environment in which the Tiecoat is used be at temperatures above 50o F.  Avoid cold surfaces and cold air temperatures especially when applying forced air flow over the coated or treated surface.

Avoid application to wood surfaces that are exposed to sources of high heat as this will draw sap, pitch, and oils to the surface and interfere with the performance of the Tiecoat.
Apply a very thin layer of the Tiecoat (0.25 mil to 0.50 mil) and permit it to dry fully before application of primer, paint, sealer, or stain.

Drying can be performed under ambient conditions (usually under 15 minutes) or by drying at elevated temperatures not exceeding 160° F.

It has been beneficial in instances where the wood surface has excessive content or presence of oils, resins, sap and pitch. In these instances, the addition of acetone to the Tiecoat enables deeper penetration into high density wood areas (knots and heart cut regions) where excess amounts sap and pitch exist.  The addition of no more than 20% acetone by volume is advised and should be slowly added to the Tiecoat under rapid agitation.  Proceed normally with the application of the Tiecoat, as described above, to the wood surface.
